The Avery Shaw Experiment is a really sweet young adult romance and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. At first I wanted to classify it under the ‘ugly duckling’ trope, but it’s really not. It’s kind of along the lines of the old eighties movie, ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, with a bit of a twist.
Avery Shaw has had her heart broken by her best friend. Being the science nerd that she is, she decides to document her recovery from said broken heart for a Science Fair project.
To make this an unbiased experiment, she enlists the help of her crush’s brother, a jock in need of some tutoring.
Written in diary form, with POV’s from both main characters, this was a fun read. I enjoyed how the story played out, and, although I didn’t really buy that this would be an acceptable science project, the premise was new and original.
The characters are likeable and engaging. The plot is well paced and the overall story compelling. A super sweet, easy read.
